About Lois Nesbitt, PhD
I’ve been a writer since I could hold a pencil—and a talker and storyteller before then! Words are just my thing. I love their sounds and shapes and shades of meanings. I won’t express an idea or opinion until I’ve chosen the right words to convey my thought.
I’m also a reader. I love what other people can do with words, how their articles and blogs and essays and books open up worlds beyond my own imagination. I listen for what works, and what doesn’t—I’ve missed my subway stop more than once rewriting the copy on subway ads!
My passion for words led me to study communications at Stanford University and a series of freelance writing gigs as I completed my B.A. at Harvard. I topped that off with a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at Princeton University, where I taught literature and expository writing.
I’ve published articles, criticism, and book reviews in The New York Times Book Review, The Boston Phoenix, Artforum, ArtNews, Elle, Kirkus Reviews, Princeton Alumni Weekly, and numerous books and catalogues. I’ve edited books for Princeton University Press, MIT Press, Columbia University, Rizzoli International, MoMA (New York), and others.
During my 30 years of teaching and training teachers, I’ve listened closely to my students. I guide them to clarify what they want to say and how to say it. I draw out skills and talents they didn’t know they had. Because everyone—and that includes you—has something to say that deserves hearing!
